December 5, 1996Richard Frank Oppman Sr., 59, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 1996) at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Father John Paisley and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, with graveside services under the direction of the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Richard, the son of Frank and Katherine Ginder Oppman, was born Dec. 29, 1936, in Mason City. He attended school in Manly and then entered the Navy in 1954. On June 7, 1959, he was united in marriage with Pauline Vodden at St. Mary's Church in Roxbury, Mass. Richard worked in maintenance at S.B. Thomas and a mechanic at South Shore Buick. Over the course of several moves between Iowa and Massachusetts, Richard worked for the city of Mason City at the waterworks, also for the Mason City Mechanic Department, owned and operated a gas station and for the past three and one-half years, he worked at Eaton Corporation in the maintenance department. Richard loved his kids more than anything. He loved being a father and grandfather. He also liked fishing, especially with his brother, George. Richard was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Belmond.
Survivors include include three daughters, Cynthia Mahnesmith of Weymouth, Mass.; Kim Gobeli and her husband, Dale, of Belmond, and Mary Schuver and her husband, Chad, of Belmond; five sons, Richard Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Klemme; Frank of Mason City; George and his wife, Michelle, of Belmond; Ray of Meservey, and Patrick of Belmond; 13 grandchildren, Robert and Melissa Mahnesmith, Timmy, Jesse and Jake Gobeli, Joey and Danielle Peveronis, Andrew and Justin Oppman, Luke and Cain Schuver, Amanda and Richard (III) Oppman; his stepmother, Stella Oppman of Manly; four brothers, George Oppman of Mason City; Mike Oppman of Manly; Mark Oppman of Manly, and Orvin Plante of San Antonio, Texas; and four sisters, Rose Marie Manzanarez of Bremerton, Wash.; Kathleen Lievrouw of Mason City; Deloris Boster of Mason City, and Darlene Colby, Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline, in 1993; two sisters; and one brother.
