Herbert J. Lester, 76, of Clarion, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) at the USA Healthcare, Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Lutheran Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. Visitation was held on Friday at the Willim Funeral Home, in Clarion.
Herbert John Lester was born on March 13, 1923, to Herbert and Harriet Louise (Poolman) Lester, on a farm near Rowan. The family moved to Clarion in 1936. He attended and graduated from the Clarion High School in 1940. He was inducted into the service in January of 1941. Herbert served in France and England. While he was in England, he became acquainted with several cousins and family who lived in England. He was discharged in November of 1945. He was then employed as a farm hand. In August of 1947, he was united in marriage to Dorothea McNamara. They resided in Clarion all their married lives. Herb was employed by the Wright County Road Department until mid 1964, when he then became employed by the Community Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1985. Herb enjoyed golfing, saw-sharpening, playing cards and loved clocks and trains. Herb was a member of the Clarion V.F.W., a member of the First Lutheran Church, serving as the church trustee, and also drove school bus.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea; four children, Maureen Pearson, of Bettendorf, Karen Stromsness and husband, Roger, of Garland, Texas, Craig Lester, of Omaha, Neb. and Dave Lester and his wife, Shirley, of Slater; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, George "Bob" and Bill Lester, both of Clarion; a sister, Betty Olson, of Garretson, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by both parents, brother, Vernon, infant brother, Lawrence, and infant sister, Harriet. Willim Funeral Home.
