Leona Wessels Goulty, 90, died on Thursday, September 30, 2004, at her home in Belmond. Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 3, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery. Organist was Dona Cleveland and Marilyn Janssen was the soloist. Casket bearers were, Duane, Dwight, Jason, Troy and Steven Wessels, Lynne Henn, Tracy McGinnis, Katrina Herink, Lila Pfleger, Lisa Blumenshine, Brenda Johnson and Lori Steerman.

Leona Wilma, the daughter of William Robert and Anna Janssen Prilipp, was born on February 19, 1914 in Hancock County, near Meservey. She attended country school and Meservey Schools. She married Luke Wessels on November l, l933. They farmed in the Meservey, Thornton and Belmond areas. In l966 the couple lost their home in the Belmond tornado. Luke died in l971. In l984 she married Lyle Goulty and lived in Kenyon, Minnesota. Lyle died in 1986 and in 1994 Leona moved back to Belmond. Leona was an active woman. She was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church and the Rebecca Circle, the Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association, past Secretary of the North Iowa Wine Club, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed the bingo crowd and being in charge of the kitchen in Belmond. She was a member of the Monday morning coffee club and enjoyed meeting at various homes. She loved to read cook books and tried many new recipes on family members. She was an avid gardener, made doll clothes and honored all of her grandchildren with an afghan at their weddings.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Luke and Lyle; sons, Kenneth in l979, LuVerne in 1988 and Bernard in 2002; and brothers, Virgil and Marvin Prilipp. Leona is survived by her son, Robert (Kathy) of Belmond; daughters-in-law, Elaine Wessels of Belmond and Donna Wessels of Washington; grandchildren, Dwight Wessels of Goodell, Duane (Barb) Wessels of Belmond, Lila (Chad) Pfleger of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jason (Jennifer) Wessels of Nevada, Lynne (Nathan) Henn of West Des Moines, Lisa (Tim) Blumenshine of St. John, Washington, Brenda (John) Johnson of Fort Lupton, Colorado, Steve (Wendy) Wessels of LaSalle, Colorado, Lori (Steve) Steerman of Keensburg, Colorado, Troy (Sarah) Wessels of Belmond, Tracy (Mike) McGinnis of Muscatine and Katrina Herink of Iowa Falls; step-grandchildren, Mike Roth of Sunset, Washington, Frank of Dallas, Texas and Lea Ann Hergert of St. John, Washington; twenty one great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
