Alvin Leroy Jacobs, 63, passed away March 20, 2005 at his home in Cottonwood, Az., after a battle with cancer. According to his wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, at 11:30 a.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alvin Leroy Jacobs Memorial Fund or a charity of choice.

Alvin was born Aug. 18, 1941, to Wayne E. and Helena (Pannkuk) Jacobs in Kanawha, Iowa. His father was killed in WWII at Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945. He attended school in Kanawha and graduated from Belmond High School, Belmond, Iowa. After graduation he joined the U.S. Marines and served in the Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. Upon his return home he married Sandra Chapman, of Clarion, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on July 21, 1961. To this union two children were born, Laura Lee and Kenneth A. He worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for a time and after leaving there he worked for a private electrician to learn the business. He then became a licensed electrical contractor. He was divorced in 1975 and moved to Springfield, Ill. On Nov. 11, 1978 he married Beverly Haydon in Pawnee, Ill., gaining four stepchildren. They moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., where he had his own electrical contracting business until his retirement three years ago. Upon his retirement, they moved to Cottonwood, Az. His passions were his family and friends. He loved the water and anything to do with it. He also loved to go RVing, camping, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed Nascar races.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 26 years, Beverly; a daughter, Laura Lee Mernka of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; a son, Kenneth (Michelle) Jacobs of Ft. Dodge; four grandchildren, Kaara and Braden Mernka, Nathan and Jena Jacobs all of Ft. Dodge; four stepchildren, Sheri (John) Williams of Covington, La., Lori (Mark) Lane of Reno, Nev., Maurice John Colen of San Francisco, Calif. and Leda Wagner of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four step-grandchildren, Leda and Esbel Williams of Covington, La. and Trisa Field and Jamie Lane of Reno, Nev., two step-great-grandchildren, Bradley Wilson and Jonathen Field of Reno, Nev. He is also survived by his mother, Helena Boelman, Clear Lake; three sisters, Irene (Lee) Doland of Waterloo, Iowa, Diann (Victor) Lambert of Pierson, Iowa and Terry (Bruce) Carlson of Clear Lake; 13 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephew and one great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Jacobs, in 1945; his stepfather, Clarence Boelman in 1977; a sister, Cindy (Melvin) Brown in 2001 and a great-great-niece, Kylee Fowler in 2002. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
