DOWS - Kenneth N. Hanson, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 4, at First Lutheran Church in Dows with Pastor Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Otis Grove Cemetery, rural Dows.

Kenneth was born March 20, 1916, to Bennett and Gene (Gunderson) Hanson on their farm in Franklin County. He attended country school near the farmstead through eighth grade and graduated from the Popejoy High School. Throughout school Ken played baseball, pitching for Popejoy when they played in the state tournament. Following graduation, Ken even spent some time pitching for a farm team in Virginia. On March 21, 1937, Ken was united in marriage to Evelyn Ingebritson at the Methodist parsonage in Hampton. The couple made their home in rural Dows where they raised their family. Ken farmed his entire life, grew an abundance of garden produce and maintained many apple trees. He taught woodworking at Popejoy High School for a short time, and continued this talent to create many pieces of furniture for his family. Bus trips to various locations was a favorite of the couple in their later years.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three sons, Merrill Hanson and wife Geraldine, Norman Hanson and wife Carol and Neilan Hanson and wife Trish all of Dows; seven grandchildren and their families, including John Hanson and wife Kerri, Brent and Ellie of Dows; and two sisters, Alice Osborne of Dows and Arlene Engelby of Iowa Falls. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda; one grandson, Erik Hanson; one sister, Lenore Kirby; and four brothers, Gilman, Merlin, Olin and Milo Hanson. Dows Community Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
