May 5, 2005Robert "Bob" Johnson, 66, of Mason City, died Monday, (May 2, 2005) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, following a courageous 20-month battle with lung cancer and a stroke. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Vernon Lutheran Church, rural Dows, with the Rev. Paul Thompson and the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will take place at the Vernon Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Dows Community Funeral Home, 100 N. Lee St., Dows, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
Robert Edward Johnson, son of Walter and Clara Ziesman Johnson, was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Webster City. Bob was baptized and confirmed at Vernon Lutheran Church, rural Dows. Bob graduated from Dows High School in 1956, where he was a member of the Dows Tigers football team. Following graduation, Bob was employed as a route salesman by Regan Bakery in Mason City for eight years. Later, he was employed by the Clear Lake Bakery as a route salesman for 32 years, often the No. 1 salesman. On July 6, 1958, Bob was united in marriage to Avonne State at Vernon Lutheran Church in rural Dows. Bob enjoyed gardening, yard work, and taking care of his home. Bob and Avonne loved to travel and traveled extensively with their children throughout the United States and Canada. Bob was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.
Bob is survived by his wife Avonne, of Mason City; one son, Brad Johnson and his wife, Kelly, of Santa Clara, Calif.; one daughter, Rhonda Johnson and her fiance, John Rainwater Jr., of San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren: Kara and Amber Johnson, of Santa Clara, Calif.; and one brother, Raymond Johnson and his wife, Monica, of Williams, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
