ProfessorGraveside services will be held Friday, November 12, in Maxwell, Iowa for Richard Walter Shackelford, 88, who passed away November 5 at his home in Visalia. "Shack," as he was known, was born October 10, 1916, in Algona, Iowa, to Wilnie and Anna Shackelford. He attended Goldfield and Burt schools and graduated from Algona High School. Shack received his bachelor's degree from Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa where he lettered in football, basketball and track, his masters from Colorado State University at Fort Collins and his doctorate from the University of Florida at Gainesville. He also served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Shack received OCS Training and achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG. He married Phyllis Marian Pearson whom he met in college, in Maxwell, Iowa, on December 22, 1940, and they came to California in 1958 to the San Francisco Bay area, where for the last 20 years of his career, Shack was a professor and taught at San Francisco State College, now known as California State University at San Francisco in the industrial design and technology department. The Shackelford family eventually came to the Visalia area in 2000. Shack enjoyed woodworking, playing bridge, fishing, hunting and traveling whenever he could.
Shack is survived by his wife of 64 years Phyllis of Visalia; his sons Scott Shackelford and wife Marilyn of Lancaster; Mike Shackelford and wife Judy of Alamo, and Lee Shackelford and wife Ronda of Montgomery Village Md., his sister Gayle Browning of Boron; grandchildren Laura, Vickie and husband Dave, Brian and his wife Jamie, Kevin, Apryl, Kacie, Darcie and husband Chad and two great-grandchildren Larissa and Danielle. Casket bearers will include Scott Shackelford, Michael Shackelford, Lee Shackelford, David Pothoven, James Myers and Joel Myers. Honorary bearers will include Raymond Link, William Hamilton and Dayton Countryman. Donations may be made in Richard's name to the Show Me Christian Youth Home, 24302 Mahin Rd. P. O. Box 6, LaMonte, MO 65337-0006 or to the American Cancer Society, 211 N. Encina, Visalia, CA 93291.
