Owatonna, MN - David Draper Paine, age 95, of Owatonna, died February 1, 2007 at his home. David was born February 3, 1911 to Roger H. Paine and Bessie (Kennedy) Paine in Eagle Grove, Wright County, Iowa. On January 1, 1933, he married Vera Miller and continued working for the family. In 1935, he moved to Pierre, SD and ran a gas business, which handled Phillips 66 products. David loved to travel and to keep up to speed on his grandchildren and their activities. He wintered in warmer climates and managed to visit most of the states at some point. He moved to Owatonna in 1999 to be closer to his family.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, his parents; five sisters; and one brother. He is survived by two sons, Myron (Birdie) Paine of Marinez, CA and David (Barbara) Paine of Ellendale; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are being completed with Michaelson Funeral Home.

David Draper Paine, age 95, of Owatonna, Minn., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 at his home. Private family services were held, with arrangements being completed with Michaelson Funeral Home. David was born February 3, 1911, to Roger H. Paine and Bessie (Kennedy) Paine, in Eagle Grove, Wright County, Iowa. At the age of five, he moved with the family to a ranch in Hand County, S.D. He grew up on the ranch and in the town of Ree Heights. There, he attended three years in a country school, and graduated from Ree Heights High School in 1928. He went on to attend the S.D. School of Mines in Rapid City from 1929 to 1931. He worked with the family, running the local telephone company and in the IHC implement company, which was acquired in 1925. He also worked with their airplane, which was acquired in 1928. In 1931 he started driving truck as the drought and depression worsened. On January 1, 1933, he married Vera Miller and continued working for the family. In 1935 he moved to Pierre and ran a gas business, which handled Phillips 66 products. In 1936 he went into business with Vera's brother-in-law in the IHC Implement business in Bryant, S.D. That business was sold in 1941, and he began to farm and move buildings. In 1942, he bought the farm that he lived on until 1999. He was a member of the Hazel School Board for several years, a member of the Farmer's Union Co-op of Bryant, and was active in the Odd Fellows Lodge and the United Church of Christ of Bryant. He helped to organize the Sioux Rural Water System and was on the state rural water board. He worked to get the local roads graveled and belonged to several local associations to improve crops and livestock. He was on the board of the Parkview Rest Home of Bryant. David loved to travel and to keep up to speed on his grandchildren and their activities. He wintered in warmer climates and managed to visit most of the states at some point. He moved to Owatonna in 1999 to be closer to his family.

He is survived by two sons, Myron (Birdie) Paine of Marinez, Calif., and David (Barbara) Paine of Ellendale; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his wife Vera; his parents; five sisters; and one brother.
