Funeral services will be held for John David VanHaaften, 96, of Belmond, at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, with Pastor John Murray officiating. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Friday at the Church.

John David VanHaaften was born Dec. 1, 1904. He was united in marriage to Bena Louise Duitscher on Dec. 25, 1929, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Clarion for a few years and purchased a farm between Clarion and Belmond. They spent 25 years at Lake Cornelia and then moved to Belmond. John was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church, loved his farming, gardening, and fishing. John died on Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond at the age of 96. He is survived by a daughter, Jalois Crotty and her husband, Larry, of Eldridge, Iowa; a son, Arlin VanHaaften, of Layton, Utah; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Bena; son, Verlyn; a granddaughter; three brothers; and four sisters. Tenold Funeral Home.
