Lee "Lillian" Van Wechel, 88, died Monday afternoon, July 17, 2000, in the Vinton Lutheran Home after an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Patrick Sheahan. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Vinton.
Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Alton, Iowa, she was the daughter of Jacob and Berendina "Dena" Scholten Cambier. On June 4, 1935, she married Ray Van Wechel at the Presbyterian Church in Alton, Iowa. She moved to Vinton with her husband, Ray, and son, Glenn, in 1937. Lee was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, sewing circle and afternoon circle and a past president of PEO Chapter HG.
She is survived by her daughter, Wanda (Mrs. Wayne) Flickinger of Denison; three sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Judy Van Wechel of Vinton, Jack and Joy Van Wechel of Grundy Center and Don and Mona Van Wechel of Van Meter; Rosie Gunn Wallace of Freeport, Ill., who grew up in the Van Wechel home; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Orville Cambier of Clarion; a sister, Gladys Swanson of Denver, Colo.; many nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray (July 26, 1992); two sisters, Josephine and Suzanne; and four brothers, William, Clinton, Franklin and Richard. A memorial fund has been established.
