Verna Margaret Lofton, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996, in her home following a long illness. Services: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, by the Rev. Michael Kleeberger. Burial: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a son, Kent and wife Lillian of Marion; a daughter, Kay DeLong and husband James of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Kim Readnour and husband Mark of Toddville; a grandson, Joel Odekirk of Cedar Rapids; and three great-grandchildren, Leta Kacer, Jade Kacer and Alex Readnour. Also surviving are two sisters, Viola Fisher and Elaine Brinkman, both of Clarion; two brothers, Carlton and Albert Dahlgren, both of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Dahlgren of San Diego.

Verna was born April 28, 1909, in Dayton Township, Wright County, to Carl and Eva Dahlgren. She married Forrest Dale Lofton on June 26, 1936, in Clarion. He died Jan. 25, 1965. A resident of Toddville, Verna graduated from Iowa State Teachers College and was an educator in the Waterloo school system for 22 years. She moved to Toddville in 1975, when she retired. The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Luke's Hospice and Home Care staff members for all their help. A memorial fund has been established.
