Merton A. Chantland, 100, of Humboldt, passed away November 30, 2006 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday December 4, 2006 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Paul Bengtson officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 2-4 p.m. Sunday December 3, 2006 at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Mr. Chantland is survived by his two daughters, Phyllis(Joe) Skinner of Goldfield, and Fern (Lee) Robinson of Mason City; grandchildren, Kurt (Linda) Skinner of Stockton, CA, Ken (special friend, Anne Radechel) Skinner of Humboldt, Janna (James Fortier) Robinson of Alexandria, N.H., and Jennifer (Ray) Schaefer; and great grandchildren, Derek and Dylan Skinner, and Rayanna Schaefer. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clara; sister, Irene Joenks; and brother, Robert Chantland.

Merton Andrew Chantland, the son of Andrew A. and Ida (Johnson) Chantland, was born March 4, 1906 at Rural Badger, Iowa. Merton moved with his parents to Humboldt in 1917 when he was 11 years old where he has remained all of his life. He was united in marriage to Clara Johnson on December 7, 1929 in Humboldt. Merton’s trade of over 40 years as a house painter and interior decorator won him many satisfied customers, particularly since he was known for the perfection, honesty, and style of his work. Merton has been a member of the Lutheran Church in Humboldt since 1917. He has served on various church committees including nine years as deacon and was a faithful worker at church dinners, and the Humboldt County Fair food stand. A highlight of his life was his 100th birthday that he celebrated at the church. He was always civic-minded, and served as a neighborhood Air Raid Warden during World War II. He helped with many school activities for his daughters and his love of fishing, hunting, and the outdoors has been a lifelong hobby shared by his wife and family. He was an avid woodworker and he and Clara enjoyed traveling together.
