Irwin “Slag” Underberg, the son of Carl and Henrietta (Hanson) Underberg, was born October 6, 1924, in Bode, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Livermore High School in 1942. Irwin served in the United States Navy during World War II. On July 23, 1949, Irwin was united in marriage with Elizabeth J. Jindrich in the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Swaledale, Iowa. The couple made their home in Swaledale and moved to Eagle Grove in 1958. Irwin farmed, was the owner of the Corner Pool Hall, worked as an insurance adjuster and sold crop insurance and he also helped out at Lyle’s Ford.
Irwin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Goldfield American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, gardening, and loved mowing his yard. He was also a VA volunteer and enjoyed driving many people for their appointments.

Irwin died Sunday, December 17, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 82 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Carol in 1981; grandson, Michael Callahan in 1990; three brothers, Ted, George and Joe Underberg and three sisters, Marie Olson, Lilly Benge and Alpha Noonan. Survivors include his wife Betty Underberg of Eagle Grove; ten children: John Underberg and wife Jacque of Eagle Grove, Dan Underberg of Eagle Grove, Jane Barz and husband Dave of Tripp, SD, Helen Tressler and husband John of West St. Paul, MN, Valerie Condon and husband Ed of Boone, Amy Wilhite and husband Mike of Boone, Tricia Underberg of Odebolt, Sandra Cherry and husband Jim of Eagle Grove, Kay Poppen and husband Brian of Eagle Grove and Joan Callahan and husband John of Stedmann, NC; 28 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenny Underberg and wife Jeanette of Livermore; sisters, Iola Foley of Humboldt and Helen Pfaff and husband Bob of Haze City, FL and many other family and friends. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father Chris Podhajsky officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
