Hattie E. Koenen, 97, of Belmond, died on Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, April 21, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Hattie Ethel, the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Frohling) Steenblock, was born on January 25, 1907, on a farm near Goodell. She attended country schools and then helped raise her brothers and sisters. Hattie married Bernhard Koenen on December 25, 1930 in George, Iowa by Pastor, Peter Koenen. They farmed several places between Belmond and Meservey and raised their family. They moved into Belmond in November of 1977. Bernhard died in December of 1986. Hattie moved to the McBurney Apartments in 2000. Hattie loved the outdoors, farming most of all. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, reading and crochet. Hattie's grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where she was involved with the Reformed Church Women Missions.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters; and seven brothers. Hattie is survived by her son, Byron (Vergene) Koenen of Clear Lake; daughter, Marjorie (Ronald) Jurgens of Belmond; grandchildren, Valerie (Wayne) Koehler, Jeff (Jeanie) Jurgens, Renae (Joseph) Jones and Kimberly (Darrin) Johnson; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Richard Steenblock of Belmond.
