Arlene Greenwood, 77, of Belmond, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Belmond Care Center, following a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 17, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services.

Arlene, the daughter of Milford Jennings and Gladys Annette (Soma) Mehl, was born on October 15, 1925 near Kanawha. She attended country school near Kanawha and later in Belmond, where she graduated from high school in 1943. She was the oldest of six children and helped care for her brothers and sisters. Arlene married Thomas A. Greenwood, on August 6, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran. They made their home in Belmond. While in high school, Arlene worked at the high school office, ABC Grocery, and First State Bank. She worked at First State until 1951 when she became a full time homemaker. She began working at Steele Memorial Clinic in 1966 and retired in 1988. Then she cared for her husband the last years of his life. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran. She was active in circles and the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation, and always believed "the Lord will provide." She enjoyed baking, gardening, canning, preserving and spending time outdoors with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Marlin Mehl. Survivors include her children, John (Sheila) Greenwood of Forest City, Tim (Rose) Greenwood of Polk City and Carolyn Greenwood and Doug Pals of Belmond; grandchildren, Christine (Ruben) Cantu, Heather (A. J.) Welch, Tom (Angie) Greenwood, Jennifer, Timmy and Katie Greenwood, Noah Reed and Tara (Colin) Steenhard; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Brady, Tanner and Cameron; sisters, Eunice Banning and Lois Patterson of Belmond; brothers, Rev. Raymond (LaMae) Mehl of Chisago City, Minnesota and Dr. Eugene (DeEtta) Mehl of Whitehouse, Ohio. Memorials should be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Wright County Hospice, Belmond Hospital Foundation, or the Belmond Health Care Center.
