Mrs. Henrietta Ostendorf Hertel, 89, formerly of Ventura, died Monday (Oct. 21, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ventura United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour before services on Thursday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Henrietta Ostendorf Hertel Memorial Fund.

Henrietta was born Aug. 23, 1907, in rural Alexander, the daughter of Peter H. and Katherina (Bos) Pals. She attended school in Alexander. Henrietta married Frank Ostendorf on Dec. 29, 1931, in George. They farmed in the Belmond and Goodell area until 1952, when they moved to Ventura. She was a cook for the Ventura Schools For several years. Her husband, Frank, preceded her in death in 1962. Henrietta married Henry Hertel in 1970 in Sioux Falls, S.D. She loved her home, reading the Bible, raising flowers, playing the piano, cooking, playing cards and most of all, visiting with her family and friends. Henrietta was a member of the Ventura United Methodist Church.

Henrietta is survived by four children, Barbara Bergman and her husband, Billy, of Clear Lake; Bonnie Williamson and her husband, LeRoy, Clear Lake; Verlyn Ostendorf of Ventura, and Ron Ostendorf and his wife, Shirley, of Clear Lake; one sister, Grace Tinkey of Belmond; one brother, Peter Pals Jr., of Belmond; three sisters-in-law, Lydia Baker and her husband, Harold, of Belmond; Clara Klehm of Belmond; and Betty Ostendorf of Alexander; one brother-in-law, Harry Ostendorf and his wife, Muriel, of Oshkosh, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one grandson, Billy Bergman Jr.; four brothers, Hans, Ililko, Herman And Joe Pals; and one sister, Kate Frohling.
