Grace J. Kalkwarf, 102, died on Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Concord Care Center in Garner. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 5, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Dona Cleveland was the organist. Loren Kalkwarf was the soloist and Alberta Kalkwarf was the accompanist. Usher was Roger Moderman. Casket bearers were Delbert Pals, Jerry Pals, Kevin Pals, Vernon Van Horn, Darold Pals, Jim Suntken, Bill Neuberger and Ron Simons.

Grace Johanna was born on March 19, 1903, to John P. and Johanna Frey Pals on a farm southwest of Meservey. She was baptized at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, graduated from the Heidelberg Catechism, and became a member of First Reformed. She attended rural school and attained an eighth grade education. She worked on the family farm. On Christmas Day 1925, Grace married Dick Kalkwarf at the First Reformed Parsonage. They farmed in the Alexander and Belmond areas for many years. In 1952, they retired and moved to a new home in Belmond. They enjoyed fishing, trips to Minnesota lakes, and playing cards with friends and relatives. Following retirement, Grace enjoyed bowling and golfing. In her honor the Belmond Country Club named one day a year Grace Kalkwarf Day. She loved many cards games and played for the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary for years. Grace crocheted many doilies and gave her handiwork to family and friends. Since moving to Belmond, Grace had been a member of the United Methodist Church. In November of 1999, she moved to the Belmond Community Apartments. Due to ill health, Grace entered the Concord Care Center in August of 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick in 1968; son, DuWayne; grandson, Gene Kalkwarf; sisters, Gertrude Musgjerd and Esther Suntken; brothers, Bert, Peter and Richard Pals; and brother-in-law, Art Musgjerd. Grace is survived by son, Loren (Alberta) Kalkwarf of Garner; daughter-in-law, Denise Kalkwarf of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren, Charlotte Hanson of Clear Lake, Lu Ann (Mark) Archer of Littleton, Colorado, Mike (Mavine) Kalkwarf of Garner, Sharon (Norman) Bosehardt of Gilbert, Arizona and Diane (Tim) Scott of Payson, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Spencer Klooster, Justin Klooster, Hayley Klooster, Katie Ryder, Tracey Bosehardt, Meredith Kalkwarf and Marty Kalkwarf; sisters-in-law, Grace Pals and Ruth Pals of Belmond; and brother-in-law, Jess Suntken of Meservey.
