Caroline Schmidt, 83, of Belmond, died on Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 29, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Caroline, the daughter of Bertus and Katie Meinderts Stadtlander, was born on September 23, 1921, on a farm near Meservey. She graduated from the Meservey High School. On November 11, 1941, she married Leonard Russell Schmidt at the First Reformed Church. They lived their entire married life in the Meservey and Alexander areas where they farmed. After Leonard lost his sight, the couple moved into Meservey in 1974 and then to a condominium in Belmond in 1980. Caroline had been a member of First Reformed since the age of eighteen, where she was also baptized and confirmed. Caroline served in many capacities, she belonged to the women's group for over 50 years, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was secretary for every committee in the church. She served on the Meservey Apartments Board. Caroline belonged to several senior citizens organizations in Meservey and Belmond and the Little Red School House in Belmond. She enjoyed reading, especially Bible studies, and collecting and trying recipes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Irene; brother, Harvey; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Irene; and cousin, Libby. Caroline is survived by a sister, Fandelene Van Horn of Sheffield.
