M. Ethyl Thompson, 100, of Belmond, died on Friday, March 4, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 8, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. JoAn Skyrme was organist and Cyndy McNulty was soloist. Casket bearers were Darl Abbas, Gary Ruka, Dick Beukema, Glen Mouw, Todd Barkema and Amber Beukema.

Mildred Ethyl, the daughter of McClennahan (Mac) and Anna Klein Thompson, was born on February 18, 1905 in Belmond. As a little girl she lived on a farm northeast of Goodell. In 1915, her family moved to Belmond. Ethyl graduated from the Belmond High School in 1923. Then she worked for a lumber and construction firm and also a bank in Klemme. In 1942 she moved to Hallock, Minnesota, where she worked for the Northwestern State Bank. She retired in 1970 and returned to Belmond in 1978. She entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1999. Ethyl enjoyed traveling and sewing. A master seamstress, she and her mother were accomplished at creating and mending clothing and quilts. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church.

Ethyl is survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Florence (Arthur) Ruka; nephews, Lyle Ruka and Merle Ruka; and niece, Eleanor (Don) Abbas.
