Herbert K. Ross, 85, of Dows, died on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. The Dows Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert Karl, the son of Albert and Elsa Ross, was born in Rostock, Germany on January 25, 1920. As a young child, Herb moved with his family to the United States and settled in the Galt area where he attended country school. He helped farm in the area until marrying Vivian Welzien on May 29, 1943 in Dows. The couple moved to Indiana where Herb worked at Inland Steel. Herb served in WW II and the Korean Conflict. The couple moved to Dows in 1952 where they owned the H & V Cafe until retiring in 1978. In retirement Herb managed the Dows Country Club and worked as a painter. They enjoyed wintering in Texas until Vivian's passing in 2002. Herb enjoyed golfing, reading, bowling, gardening, fishing, and loved to play cribbage. Herb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as elder. He helped with Dows Corn Days, served on the Dows City Council, was a Past President of the Dows Country Club, and a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Elizabeth; brother, Walter; sons-in-law, Richard Lee, Michael Armour, and John Kunz; and granddaughter-in-law, Mika Lee. Herb is survived by daughters, Nancy Lee of Belmond and Sylvia Armour-Greenwood (Jerry) of Belmond; grandchildren, Stacie (Simmie) Elmore and their children, Alexa, Dillon, Trae, Zoie and Miko of Belmond, Chad (Angela) Armour and their children, Tyson and Cole of Belmond, Richard Lee and his children, Daniel, Ricky and Kaytlynn of Belmond, Mark (Jennifer) Armour and their daughter, Lindsay of Belmond, Ryan (Mara) Lee of Des Moines and April (Noah) Wolter and their daughters, Ashley and Autumn of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Arliss Tangeros of Estherville and De Ross of Des Moines; and family friend, Gale Wegman.
