Mary L. Negrete, 76, of Belmond, died on Saturday, February 5, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Interment was in the St. Francis Cemetery. Organist was Maxine Whitty and cantor was Jon Barrett. Ushers were Dr. Art Benetti and Jim Houser. Honorary casket bearers were Coleen Greiman, Regina Lamoureux, Helen Dorr, Veronica Benetti, Mona McNamara and Nancy Beenken. Casket bearers were Herb Greiman, Enrique Candanoza, Bob McNamara, Art Lamoureux, Victor Mendizabal and Terry Anderson.

Mary Lou, the daughter of Benjamin and Josephine Barron Argumedo, was born on June 1, 1928, in West Des Moines. She graduated from the Valley High School in 1946. She married Joseph Negrete on February 26, 1949, at the Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines. They moved from West Des Moines to Belmond where she was a homemaker and worked part time at Acco Seed Company. She enjoyed working in her garden and canning the fruits from her labor. Mary was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed watching her family participate in football and wrestling and was an avid sports fan in general. She enjoyed music and loved listening to her favorites. Mary was an active member of the St. Francis Xavier parish and helped many people in the local Hispanic community.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2002; two sisters; a half-brother; and a half-sister. Mary is survived by sons, Frank of Clarion, Dennis (Bea) of Belmond and David (Kayla) of Grimes; grandchildren, Jesse (Shawna), Jessica, Brennan and Brock; great-grandchildren, Kobe, Vada and Ava; brother, Richard Argumedo of Des Moines; and sisters, Margaret Villagomez of Des Moines, Josephine Hernandez of Tampa, Florida, Carmen Gooding of West Des Moines and Judy Freyre of Miami Beach, Florida.
