Helen M. Smith, 99, Belmond, died January 5, 2006 at the Belmond Health Care Center. Services were held Tuesday, January 10 at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Janet Pals was organist and Maxine Whitty was soloist. Honorary casketbearers were Danny Lowenberg, Greg Smith, Tami Paysinger, Zackery Smith, Joshua Smith, Jim Brand, Kyle Smith and Patrick Johnson. Casketbearers were, Cathy Korthas, Pamela Cisco, Justin Helgeland, John Smith, Judy Daily, Junior Peck, Douglas Lowenberg and Dennis Lowenberg.

Helen was born October 31, 1906 on a farm near Beacon, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey and Nellie Bowen Malone. Her early life was spent on a farm near Eddyville where she attended country school and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1925. While in her teens she joined the Congregational Church and the Y.W.C.A. Following high school she attended nursing school in Oskaloosa. Helen married Harold L. Smith of Britt on May 1, 1930. The family lived in Britt, Clear Lake, Lacona, Pleasantville, Wesley, and Belmond, as well as Stewartville, MN and Kahoka, MO. Most of their life was spent on the farm, where Helen enjoyed working with the soil. She loved the outdoors and all of its wonders. Helen's life was devoted to caring for her large family. In 1972 the couple retired in Belmond. She had been a resident at the care center since October 1996.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1979; brothers Homer and William Malone; sister Ada Hafferman; and great-grandson Anthony Lowenberg. Helen is survived by daughters Charlotte Smith of Belmond, Mildred (Ray) Lowenberg of Belmond, Dorothy Brand of Clear Lake, Joan (Bob) Dankbar of Clear Lake, Linda Smith of Mason City, and Kathleen (Tom) Godden of Mason City; sons Robert (Mary) Smith of Youkon, OK, Harvey (Susan) Smith of Prescott, AZ, and Stanley (Nancy) Smith of Stanwood, WA; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
