Alvin Braner, 85, Belmond, died October 4, 2006. Services were held October 7 at Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Alvin Merle was born October 17, 1920 in Belmond, the son of Wessel and Magdalene (Mennenga) Braner. He attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Belmond High School. He served in the Navy V-5 Air Corp program. He worked with his father on the family farm until his father retired in 1952, and then Alvin continued farming. In 1952 he married Crystal Thompson. They lived on the farm for 45 years until moving into Belmond.
Alvin was a life long member of Immanuel Reformed, where he was baptized. He served as deacon and elder. He loved singing in the choir and helped with crafts at Bible School. Alvin played league softball in his younger days. He sponsored and played on a league volleyball team until he was 69. He was known for the whole wheat bread he made, winning blue ribbons at several fairs. He volunteered at the Lyric Theatre and for Meals On Wheels.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Velma Hauge. Alvin is survived by his wife; sons Kevin (Andrea) and Scott (Kathy); grandchildren Aubrey Stadtlander, Alyssa, Anna and Alex Braner; sister Phyllis Cullinan; and brothers-in-law Dale Hauge and Sterling Thompson.
