Goldfield Pioneer Dies in Des Moines
S. Wellington Pinkham. 93, a pioneer resident of Goldfield, died Tuesday afternoon of last week at Grayson Nursing home in Des Moines. He had been ill and in the nursing home about 10 days. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Goldfield Methodist church, Rev. Frank C. Greene officiating. Leonard Madison sang "Abide With Me" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Mrs. Glen G. Braden was organist. Pallbearers were Clifford Axon, Ray Griffith, Earl Anderson, George Hawkins, Glen Trotter and Kenneth Whyte. Burial was in Glenwood cemetery. Mr. Pinkham had been living with his daughters in Des Moines most of the time since the death of his wife about six years ago. Sylvanus Wellington Pinkham was born April 23, 1860, at Argyle, in Green county, Wis. He was the oldest of seven children born to Henry Clay and Miranda Oviatt Pinkham. Of these, two survive: Mrs. Ellen Overbaugh of Spokane, Wash., and Henry C. Pinkham of Goldfield. The family was a pioneer family, coming to Goldfield, then called Brassfield, in 1874. Wellington taught in the Wright county schools, and later settled on the farm a mile east of Goldfield lived until 1909. In December, 1894, he was married to Millie A. DeVoe of Argyle. Wis., who died May 12, 1947. The couple had three children: Margie (Mrs. A. A. Herrick) of Des Moines. Josephine (Mrs. James M. Stewart) also of Des Moines. Vivian, another daughter died in infancy. Besides the brother and sister and daughters, he is survived by four grandchildren and five greatchildren. Mr. Pinkham was always active in community affairs, having served on the school board and for many years was mayor of Goldfield.
