ROWAN - Edna Maxine Bailey, 85, passed away Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Belmond Community Hospital in Belmond. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Church of Rowan, with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Rowan. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Edna Maxine (Hansen) Bailey, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Olson) Hansen, was born Aug. 20, 1914, near Rowan. She grew up and attended school in Rowan and graduated from Rowan High School in 1932. She attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught at country schools in Vernon Township, Wright County, and West Fork No. 2 in Franklin County. She was employed as a nanny in Chicago from 1939 to 1941. On April 6, 1941, she married Edwin Bailey. They had three children, Lynn, LaNell and Alvin. They farmed in the Rowan area until Edwin's death in October of 1968. She moved into Rowan in 1978. Edna was a member of the Rowan Progress Club, Legion Auxiliary, Alpha Circle, a quilting group and the United Church of Rowan. She enjoyed playing her piano, sewing and flower gardening. She greatly enjoyed seeing her grandchildren in their music programs. Edna loved to travel and made trips to Mexico, Scandinavia, India and China.

Survivors include her son, Lynn Bailey of Rowan; daughter, LaNell and her husband, John Brandes, of Waterloo; son, Alvin Bailey and his wife, Becky, of Rowan; a brother, Arvid Hansen of Rowan; five grandchildren, Shane Bailey and his wife, LoRell, Alyssa and her husband, Brad Hamlyn, Linda and her husband, Kevin Brandes, Anne-Marie Bailey and Kathryn Bailey; and four great-grandchildren, Heather, Patrick, Michael and Isabelle. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents; and a great-grandson, Tony. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
