ROWAN - Elfreda M. Whitten, 102, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond. Her body was cremated and a private inurnment service will take place at Graceland Cemetery in Rowan at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Belmond Community Hospital or the United Church of Rowan.

Elfreda Myrtle Whitten was born on Nov. 28, 1897, the daughter of Walter H. and Addie A (Duffy) Whitten. After graduating from high school, she attended the Iowa State Teachers College where she received her teaching degree. Elfreda went on to teach school for a few years, but she spent most of her adult working years doing clerical work at the Decker Packing Plant in Mason City. She retired in Rowan where she had lived for the past 34 years. She was a member of the United Church of Rowan.

Survivors include her niece, Katherine Ihm, of Newton; two great-nieces, Carolyn DiMambro of Reading, Mass., and Marcia Kelly of Norwalk; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Berneda M. Rietz. Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond is in charge of arrangements.
