EMILY BEATRICE LONG

CORWITH — Emily Beatrice Long, 81, entered her eternal home on May 13, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with the Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Interment will be in the Corwith Cemetery in Corwith. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith.

Emily Beatrice Long was born on April 17, 1922, the daughter of Adolph and Bessie Carrie Nelson Johnson at Badger, Iowa. Emily was baptized as an infant and confirmed at the Badger Lutheran Church in Badger. Emily accepted Jesus as her Savior as a child and continued as His faithful believer until entering the Kingdom upon her earthly death. Emily graduated from the Eagle Grove High School in 1940, and upon earning her teaching certificate, taught school in rural Corwith and Klemme. Emily also attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Emily worked for a number of years for Drs. Smith and Hogenson in Eagle Grove. She then resumed her professional education career at the Middle School in Eagle Grove, as the Reading Media Specialist until her retirement. On Jan. 17, 1942, Emily was united in marriage to Carl Robinson Long of Corwith. They were married in Chillicothe, Mo. by the Rev. Sterling Ward. Three children were born to this union, Carl David, James Michael and Sherrie Diane. Carl and Emily farmed in Corwith for a number of years before moving to Eagle Grove. After Carl’s retirement, they returned to Corwith. Emily remained in Corwith until moving to Prairie View Apartments in Garner, Iowa in May of 2001. Emily treasured, not only her friends of many years, but friends that blessed her life upon moving to her new home in Garner. Emily remained active until her death, with her involvement in her church life, her friends and her community. Emily was Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, past president of the Corwith Federated Club, and was a member of the Royal Neighbor Club and Delta Club. Emily, for years, loved spending hours playing Scrabble, Dominoes, Bridge, 500 and her daily Crossword Puzzles. She was a Champion. Emily was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Corwith, where she enjoyed attending Circle and being a Bible Study Leader. She also belonged to the St. John’s Lutheran Church quilting group.

Emily is survived by her loving children, Carl David and wife, Joan, of Postville, and Sherrie Dianne Dobson and husband Larry, of Chaska, Minn. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Daniel Long and wife, Sharon, Kent Long, Carl D. Long and wife, Mandy, Brent D. Long and wife, Lori, Lisa and Kory Long, John C. Dobson and wife, Heather and Erica Ann Dobson. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Genevive Hamer, of Eagle Grove; two brothers, Charles Jr. Johnson, of Eagle Grove, and Richard D. Johnson, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; sister-in-law, Alice C. Lederer, of Sun City West, Ariz. and num-erous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; son, James Michael; brother, Kermit; sisters, Ethel and Burnette; and great-grandson, Torin David Long. Emily was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and much loved grandmother, who will be sorely missed by her loving family and friends. She en-riched our lives. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.
