Swea City, IA - Alfred A. Hurlburt, age 86 of Swea City, IA, died December 23, 2000 at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, IA. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Swea City. Burial followed at the Harrison Township Cemetery in Swea City. Alfred, the son of Fred and Ida (Herke) Hurlburt, was born August 14, 1914 in Osgood, IA. He received his education in the country schools and graduated from Emmetsburg, Iowa High School. Alfred attended Business College in Grand Island, Nebraska. After completing business college, Alfred worked as a bookkeeper for a hotel in Alliance, Nebraska. On June 6, 1937, Alfred was united in marriage to Marjorie Tucker in Harrisburg, Nebraska. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved back to Palo Alto County and Alfred operated gas stations in Graettinger and Emmetsburg, Iowa. In 1941, the family moved to a farm near Seneca, IA, and later Wallingford, IA, and then Elmore, where Alfred farmed until 1965. He then managed the fertilizer plant in Ledyard, IA. They then owned and managed a motel in Eagle Grove, IA, for seven years until 1985. They moved to Humboldt, IA, for a short time before moving to Swea City, where they have lived since. Alfred enjoyed flower gardening, hunting, fishing and reading in his spare time. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Swea City and was a lay speaker and taught Sunday School throughout the years at various churches. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hurlburt of Swea City, IA; one son, James Francis Hurlburt and wife Marie of Apple Valley; three daughters: Nancy Haas and husband Eldon of Elmore, Joyce Kramer and husband Rev. Ron of Des Moines, IA, and Kathy Hurlburt of Swea City, IA; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Maynard and Mancil.
