Lee Carpenter [Richard Henry Lee Carpenter]

Death came to Lee Carpenter, resident of Cass County since 1927, on June sixth [1944], at the home of his son, Spence, in Longville after a brief illness. Mr. Carpenter moved from Webster, South Dakota, to Backus in September 1927. He made his home there until about nine years ago, since then living much of the time with his son in Longville.

Lee Carpenter was born in Richmond, Wisconsin, June 15, 1867. He passed away at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 22 days. When a young man he moved to Dows, Iowa. In 1889 he was united in marriage to Sara Elizabeth Zook. To this union seven children were born: Lloyd Carpenter of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Spencer of Longville; Mrs. Warren (Wava) Kimball of Backus; Mrs. Ed (Hazel) Schmidt and Walter of Webster, South Dakota; Ray of Austin. His wife and son Dale preceded him in death. He also leaves two sisters, one brother, twenty grandchildren and twenty-two great grand children to mourn his passing. He was a devoted husband and good father.

Those attending the funeral from away were Mrs. Dell Zook; Mr. and Mrs. John Zook and daughter Nancy; Ray Carpenter and Mrs. Iola Lindeman, all of Austin; Mrs. Lannett Anett of Black River Falls, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Doc Carpenter, Mrs. Charles Hofsammer of Dows, Iowa and Phoebe (Carpenter) Hasstrousee of St. Paul Minnesota.
