Death Claims Mrs. Lee Carpenter of Backus

Mrs. Lee Carpenter was called to her home beyond last Friday evening when she was suddenly taken ill and lived but a few minutes. She died sitting in her chair. The children were all home for the funeral and also one sister-in-law, two nieces and one nephew, from Austin, Minn.

Sarah Elizabeth Zook was born in Oregon, Wisconsin Nov. 30th, 1866; died Feb. 16, 1934, age 67 years, two months and 16 days. When a child she moved with her parents to Hampton, Iowa. In 1889 she was married to Richard Henry Lee Carpenter of Dows, Iowa. To this union seven children were born; Lloyd and Spencer Carpenter and Mrs. Wava Havirland of Backus, Minn. Mrs. Hazel Schmidt and Walter Carpenter of Webster, S. Dak. and Ray Carpenter of Austin, Minn., and Dale who preceded his mother to her home 3 years ago. She also leaves one brother at Clear Lake, Iowa, and one sister at Mason City, Iowa, and 17 grandchildren. When a girl she was converted and united with the M. E. church in Hansell, Iowa. She remained a member until her death. Mrs. Carpenter was of a generous self sacrificing nature, not thinking more of herself than she should think, but always thinking of others.

Well the poet might have been thinking of her when he wrote:
“Lord, help me, to live from day to day,
In such a self forgetful way that even when I kneel to pray,
My prayer shall be for others”

She was never too tired or too busy to help others, and her good works live after her. So when a mother dies, for years beyond our ken, the light she leaves behind her, upon the father of men.
