Kanawha- Funeral services for John D. Welsh,80, were held at the Kanawha Methodist Church Friday morning at 10 with the Rev R D Kitterman in charge. Interment was in the cemetery at Eldora. Music was furnished by the Methodist choir. Mr Welsh had suffered several strokes the past month and was taken to a Mason City hospital where he succumbed.

John D. Welsh, son of John and Mary Welsh, was born June 20, 1868 at Steamboat Rock. He spent his early boyhood in Hardin County near Eldora where he received his education. On May 24, 1891, he was married to Isabelle Thompson at Goldfield and they had 7 children. About 1900 they moved from Webster City to this vicinity and at various times resided at Mason City and Clarion. Mr. Welsh pioneered in several fields. He had the honor of being one of the orginal signers of the town of Kanawha's articles of incorporation. He was the 1st mail carrier near here. During his working days he served at many occupations including farming, postal service and restaurant operation. The younger generation will remember him as a justice of the peace, a position he held for many hears here. He was a member of the local Methodist Church, joining in 1917.

Mr. Welsh was preceded in death by his parents, his mother, 3 step brothers, a step sister and 2 children, Mabel and Mrs. Clarence Odel and Bertha Matilda who died in infancy. Surviving are his wife, 1 sister, Mrs. Nettie Strother of Eldora; 5 children, Bessie Ruth, Mrs. Henry Peck of Garner, Howard of Fairfield, Orville of Cleveland, Ohio; Myrtle, Mrs. Myrtle Mariner of Kanawha, and Marie, Mrs. Lloyd Babcock of Compton, CA. 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
