ARTHUR C. NAGLE - Pianist and Association Official

Arthur C. Nagle, 77, a retired association official who performed in dual piano concerts with his wife, Alice Ingersoll Nagle, for four decades, died May 19 at Sibley Memorial Hospital after a stroke. He lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Mr. Nagle retired in 1982 as vice president of the International Road Federation, which promotes improvements in the economy of Third World nations through better transportation. He had been with the organization since 1956. He and his wife played at the Kennedy Center, Friday Morning Music Club, Phillips Collection and elsewhere between 1945 and 1986. They gave lecture recitals, were featured with chamber and symphony orchestras and performed on radio and television. Composers who created works for the Nagles included Emerson Meyers, Richard Bales and Malcolm Williamson. Mr. Nagle was born in Clarion, Iowa. He was a cum laude graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He served in the Army Air Forces in the Mediterranean during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star. He worked from the late 1930s to 1954 at the State Department, where he was an administrative officer, head of the political section in the division of international conferences and chief of the policy report staff. He was director of special projects at the Institute of International Education in New York in the mid-1950s. Mr. Nagle was a governor of the Friday Morning Music Club and a trustee of its foundation. He was president of the Kindler Foundation, which commissions chamber music, and a member of the Cosmos Club. In addition to his wife of 48 years, of Chevy Chase, survivors include a sister, Dorothy Nagle Cameron of San Francisco.

Arthur C. Nagle, 77, pianist, State official

Arthur C. Nagle, 77, a former State Department officer who also performed for more than 40 years as a pianist with his wife, died of a stroke May 19 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. A Chevy Chase resident, Mr. Nagle was born in Clarion, Iowa, and graduated cum laude from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in 1940. He served in World War II in the Army Air Forces in the Mediterranean, where he received a Bronze Star. Mr. Nagle worked for the State Department from the late 1930s to 1954, where he was an administrative officer, head of the political section in the division of international conferences and chief of the policy report staff. He was director of special projects at the Institute of International Education in New York in the mid-1950s. In 1956, he moved on to work at the International Road Federation, which advocates transportation as a tool for developing Third World nations' economies. He remained with the association until 1982, retiring as its vice president. Mr. Nagle and his wife, Alice Ingersoll Nagle, played piano together in the metropolitan area and elsewhere - including the Kennedy Center, Friday Morning Music Club and Phillips Collection - between 1945 and 1986. The two gave lecture recitals, were featured with chamber and symphony orchestras and performed on radio and television. Besides his wife of 48 years, he is survived by a sister, Dorothy Nagle Cameron of San Francisco.
