Roger Newburn, 78, died of a stroke and lung cancer on December 29, 2003 at home, 515 Luther Drive in Ames. Funeral services will be on January 1, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Cecilia's Church in Ames. Roger was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa on October 15, 1925 to Francis and Maude Newburn. He lived in Eagle Grove from birth to 1973, overseas from 1973 through 1994 and thereafter in Ames. Roger's personal goal was to honor the dignity and well-being of the common person, especially farmers. In the Midwest, he was a farmer and entrepreneur, developing innovative grain storage techniques. He served in eight developing countries as a team leader of agricultural advisors. His influence in improving the quality of life in those countries spanned all levels from working with top government officials on agricultural systems, to enabling individual farmers to help themselves.

He married Teresa Scallon on June 15, 1950. His survivors include his brother, Ed of Salem, OR, and his wife Pat and their family and six children, Rebecca Frohnmayer of Tegernsee, Germany, with children Katrin, Christine and Stephanie Linda Jo Devlaeminck of Vancouver, WA, with husband Jerome and children, Ruth, Jeana, Michelle and Rachael Colleen Stortvedt of Norfolk, NE, with husband Mark and children, Beracah, April and Cherise Jeff Newburn of Davenport, IA, with wife Sharon and children Rose and Ben Pete Newburn of Rialto, CA, with wife Joy and son Joshua and Chris Newburn of South Beloit, IL, with wife Amy and son John Patrick. He was preceded in death by one son, one unborn child, one son-in- law, four grandchildren and eight unborn grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31 at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. The Scripture service will be at 5:30 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions go to Br. Regis Faust to cover transportation costs for donated medical supplies sent to mission hospitals worldwide.
