Jean Middleton Wittman, 78, a retired head of the correspondence branch in the old Office of Consumer Affairs, died of a heart attack June 20 at Montgomery General Hospital. Mrs. Wittman, a resident of Leisure World in Silver Spring and a former resident of Rockville, was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She attended Eagle Grove Community College. In 1940, she moved to Washington. During World War II, she worked for the Office of Price Administration. In 1961, Mrs. Wittman joined the staff of the President's Commission on the Status of Women, and later she worked for other agencies. She began working for the Office of Consumer Affairs when it was set up in 1971, and she remained with it when it was transferred to the old Department of Health, Education and Welfare in 1973. She retired in 1975.

Her marriage to Virgil W. Wittman ended in divorce. Survivors include two children, Anne W. Cissel of Rockville and Ellen Heebe of Silver Spring; a sister, Gail Parrish of Ottumwa, Iowa; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren
