Roy Poland, 74, Former Resident Dies in California

Roy Poland, 74, a former Gladbrook resident, but late of Colton, Calif., died Wed., Feb. 12, 1964 in the Veteran's hospital at Long Beach, Calif., where he had been a patient for about a week. He had suffered with arthritis for a number of years but this winter complications set in. He was the oldest son of the late Eugene and Emma Peters Poland and was in Gladbrook. When a small boy his mother died and he went to live with his grandparents on a farm near Chadron, Neb. When he was 16 years old he went to work on the railroad and became a railroad engineer on the North Western line out of Eagle Grove. He enlisted in the First World War and was with the 13th Railroad Engineer Corps in France. Following the war he returned to the states and was united in marriage to Helen Anderson of Eagle Grove. Four children were born to this union. Richard of Bernardino, Calif., Mrs. Dee (Emagene) Mullins, Mrs. Norman (Doris) Burch and Darlene, who passed away when a small child. The three surviving children all live at Colton, Calif. In the early thirties he moved with his family to Colton, Calif., where he was a railroad engineer for the Southern Pacific, and later an engineer at Keyser plant. He is survived by his wife, 3 children, 7 grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Harold (Mae) Long of Los Angeles, Calif., two brothers, Harold and Walter of Gladbrook; his stepmother, Mrs. Mary Poland of Gladbrook, one half sister Mrs. Willard (Gene) Hagen of Grinnell; and two half brothers, Denman Poland of Akron, Iowa, and Wellwyn Poland of Reinbeck. Funeral services were held in the Colton Funeral Home on Saturday morning, Feb. 15, with burial in the Memorial Gardens there. His sister, Mrs. Flossie Martin of Traer, preceded him in death a few years ago.
