Harlan L. Heard, age 80, passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004. He was born on Oct. 4, 1923, in Magnolia, Minn., the son of George E. and Helen E. (Lester) Heard. Harlan moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1933 and had lived most of his life there except for two years to attend Iowa State University and a 30-month stint in the service. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Army as an airplane commander on a B24. When he returned from the service, Harlan went into business with his father selling GE appliances and Phillips petroleum. In 1950, they built the station on North Commercial and he, his father and brother operated as Phillips 66 jobbers until 1962 when they sold the business. Harlan then went to work for Northwestern Mutual Life until his retirement in 1997, after 35 years of service. He married Dorothy Moen in 1949 and together they raised four children, Linda (Doug) Tuffree of Middleton, Paul Heard of Urbandale, Iowa, Laura (Jim) Gorman of Palatine, Ill., and John (Nancy) Heard of Redmond, Wash. Survivors also include six grandchildren, Lisa Heard, Ryan Heard, Jason Heard, Jacob Heard, Nikole Tuffree and Jenny Tuffree; and his brother, James (Donna) Heard of Surprise, Ariz. In 2002, Harlan and Dorothy moved to Middleton to be closer to family and had resided at Middleton Glen. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
