February 9, 1900 -- November 21, 2001

Lucille Wells, a Port Washington, N.Y., resident since 1989, passed away peacefully Nov. 21, 2001, just three months short of her 102nd birthday. Until entering the Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Wells resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and George Knight, at their home in the Old Mitchell Farms section of Port Washington, and actively participated in the affairs of the community.

Born in Dows, Iowa, in 1900, Lucile spent her childhood at a time when the frontier environment was still a very real presence. Following her graduation from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., she taught high school prior to her marriage to Harry Wells, a department store executive. They made their home in Akron, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pa., and then in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Subsequently, she was the executive director of the Akron, Ohio, Area Girl Scouts and then moved on to teach at a Lutheran school in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She traveled widely in the U.S. and Europe in her later years.

She is survived by her daughters, Penny of Port Washington, MaryBeth of Mt. Shasta, Calif., as well as seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by three generations of the immediate family and by numerous others who have been touched by her long and active life.
