Joseph Arnt Luthro 1/3/1918 ~ 1/29/2004

Joseph Arnt Luthro was born January 3, 1918 in a farmhouse near Goldfield, in North Central Iowa, Wright County. He was the first child of John Luthro and Marie Thompson Luthro. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School and Waldorf College, in Iowa and taught in a rural school for two years. He graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD in 1941 and Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN in 1944. Joe was ordained as a Lutheran pastor, June 4, 1944 on a call to go to China as a missionary. He and Margaret Boe were married to each other on June 7, 1944. Plans changed and the couple went to Fairbanks, Alaska to a newly organized congregation in November, 1944. After five years there, Margaret and Joe were in parishes in Silverton, Oregon; Petersburg, Alaska; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Lynwood, California. Pastor Luthro retired March 31, 1984 and the Luthros moved to Long Beach, California. Margaret died in Long Beach, August 18, 1989. In June of 1996 Pastor Luthro returned to Silverton to live.

Those who survive include son, Kenneth Luthro of Sandy, Utah and his wife Vickie and sons, Michael, Robert, James, and Kenneth; daughter, Melna Luthro Bennett of Gillette, Wyoming and her husband Greg and children, Sterling, Jo Lynn and Ray; sister, Berniece Thayer of Salem, Oregon and her son Elton Thayer of Phoenix, Arizona and his wife Janet and their children Lauren and Adam. Also, niece, Ellen Rockholm and nephews, Boe, Richard and Ronald James and 13 great grandchildren. Contributions may be sent to Trinity Lutheran in Silverton.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. - Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton Oregon. The services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Silverton, Oregon. Interment following worship at Valley View Cemetery, Silverton, Oregon
