Virginia E. Horton
Virginia was born June 16, 1913 in Eagle Grove Iowa to Merle Mead and Vada Wilcox Mead. She became a Christian at age eleven and at age fourteen, she was asked to assist in teaching a third grade class in the Baptist Church. She has been teaching one way or another, ever since. Virginia had 5 sisters and one brother. Virginia married Carlyle Erickson in 1933 and they moved to Webster City, Iowa where they lived for forty years. They adopted their orphaned nephew, Joseph Allen Erickson in 1936 and a son, David Michael was born in 1947. Virginia returned to school later in life and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1965. She taught in the Webster City schools for over fifteen years. In 1973 they moved to Mesa, AZ and their son, David died in Wisconsin in 1981. In 1983 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1986 Carlyle passed away after an extended illness. On December 20th, 1987, Virginia married Jerome S. Horton and they lived in Mesa until 1994 when they entered Friendship Village. They quickly became active participants with Virginia teaching oil painting classes and heading up a game night and a visitation committee. Jerome helped people with their taxes and other accounting difficulties. Jerome passed away in 1996. Virginia had always been an active member in which ever church she was a part of. She called Tri-City Baptist Church her church home when she passed away. She leaves behind one son, Joseph Allen Erickson, her daughter in law; Marlene Erickson, seven grand children and 11 great-grand children. She also leaves behind 3 sisters; Amber Davis, Francis Boring and Marjorie Davis. In addition to all her relatives, she leaves many friends and co-laborers behind at Friendship Village to mark her passing, Feb. 15, 2004 at the age of 90. A Memorial Service will be held at Friendship Village in Tempe AZ. at 2:00, Saturday, March 13th.
