Eugene L. "Earl' Mosher, 84, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully early Sunday morning, October 1, 2006, in the Riverview Care Center in Crookston, with his family at his side. Earl was born in Crookston on May 17, 1922, and was the son of Bert and Elizabeth (Barth) Mosher. He grew up and attended school in Eagle Grove, Iowa. As a young man Earl moved to rural Beltrami, Minnesota where he worked for his brother, Daniel "Doc' Mosher, on Doc's farm in Reis Township. On October 6, 1941 he was united in marriage to June Ogaard at Dakota City, Nebraska. Earl and June would have celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary in just a few more days. The couple made their home on Doc's farm, eventually purchasing it in 1947. Together they raised three children, Harlan, Gary, and Connie. While Earl farmed he also maintained a small road construction business for a few years with his brother, Glenn, and then managed the ground operations for Dale Walters Aviation, based at Fertile, Minnesota. He later became a part-time salesman for Salem Motors in Fertile, and George Salem would tell everyone that Earl could truly "sell ice-boxes to the Eskimos'. In 1963 Earl's son, Harlan ("Red'), took over the farming operation and Earl and June moved to Crookston where he became a Polk County Deputy Sheriff under Paul Caouette. In 1974 Earl was elected Polk County Sheriff and thereafter served three terms as the very popular head of county law enforcement. He was known for the fairness with which he treated everybody, and his common-sense approach to doing a very difficult job. Earl retired in 1986 after twenty-four years of service to the citizens of Polk County. He enjoyed being able to spend more time with June, his kids, and the grandkids, and would help out on the farm during harvest season. For as long as his health allowed, he continued to tinker in the workshop, mow the lawn, and lend a hand whenever and wherever needed. Earl was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston, and a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Beltrami. He was a former member of the Minnesota Sheriff's Association, a longtime member of the Crookston Elks Lodge, and had belonged to Crookston Eagles Aerie #873 for over sixty-two years. He was also an avid Twins and Vikings fan, supporting them no matter what kind of season they were having.

Very sadly for Earl, June, and family, their daughter, Connie Larson, died on April 16, 2000. In May of 2005 he moved from his home to the Riverview Care Center. He will be sadly missed, but he remains forever in the hearts of his family and many friends. May God bless Earl's memory. Loving family members include his wife, June; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harlan "Red' and Jan Mosher of Beltrami, MN, and Gary and Donna Mosher of East Grand Forks, MN; a son-in-law, Jerome Larson of Fertile, MN; nine grandchildren, Guy (Lindi) Mosher, Chad (Donna) Mosher, and Tyler (Melissa) Mosher, all of Fertile, Rod (Linda) Mosher of Gresham, OR, Rich (Rhonda) Mosher of East Grand Forks, MN, Ryan (Carol) Mosher of Grand Forks, ND, Tim (Kim) Larson of Fertile, Julie (Brant) Skanson of Reno, NV, and Melissa (Brandon) Stewart of Hawley, MN.
