Rex Eugene Lovrien, age 75, of St. Paul, died peacefully at home with his family on March 24, 2003 of congestive heart failure. Survived by wife, Joan; children, Lucy Lovrien & fiance Nicholas Poser, Boston, MA, John Lovrien & wife Nga Tang, Spring Lake Park, MN, Anna Lovrien, Winona, MN. Also survived by brothers, Warren Lovrien (Kathy), Leland Lovrien (Lila), Harry James Winslow (Irene), Everett Lovrien (Pierrette), and sisters, Eunice Ellerbrock and Lynn Maiocco (Fred.

Rex was born on a farm at Eagle Grove, Iowa, on January 25, 1928, where he attended a one-room country school, then in 1939 he moved with his family to Sac City, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. At 17, he enlisted in the Army just before V-J Day, and served with occupying forces in Asia. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, received a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1958, and then was a post-doctoral fellow at Yale University, the University of Indiana, and the University of Minnesota. In 1965, he became a professor in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus, where he worked until his death. During his academic career, he mentored many students and published over 60 papers. An avid traveler, he worked with scientific colleagues around the world, and helped students from many countries, especially Lithuania and Latvia, come to the United States for study. And despite living in the city his entire adult life, he always retained the values and interests of his farmer beginnings, including passions for polka music and farm machinery. Memorial Service 10:30 AM Saturday, April 5 at Unity Church Unitarian, Portland & Grotto in St. Paul. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Nature Conservancy of Minnesota, Fairview Hospice, or Unity Church Unitarian. Twin Cities Cremation
