Helen E. Farran, 94, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Rowan with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.
Helen, the daughter of James and Emma Scott Walpole, was born Dec. 12, 1906, in Rock Valley, Iowa. She grew up in Rock Valley where she attended Rock Valley Community Schools and graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1924. After high school Helen attended Iowa State University in Ames, where she received her normal training. She taught one year of country school south of Rock Valley and then began teaching in Rowan at the Rowan Community School. Helen was united in marriage with Dale "Curly" Farran on Nov. 27, 1936, in Orange City. The couple made their home in Rowan where they lived their entire married life. Curly passed away in 1963. Beginning her career in Rowan in 1928, Helen dedicated her life to teaching. While teaching, she continued her education at Iowa State University. She received her bachelor of science degree in June of 1953. In Rowan, Helen taught all grades in many areas, including but not limited to, physical education, English, sciences, foreign languages and home economics. As the Rowan girls basketball coach, Helen took that team to the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament in 1929. She retired from teaching in 1971. After retirement Helen traveled the world extensively. Besides travel, her hobbies included gardening, quilting, sewing and cooking. Helen is fondly remembered for her homemade candy and rolls. She also enjoyed playing bridge which she played on her last birthday. Helen was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority at Iowa State University and remained an active member throughout her life. Helen was a long-time member of the United Church of Rowan.
She is survived by two nieces, Jean Cowden of Santa Rosa, N.M., and Mary Ann Rebello and her husband, Harvey, of Mechanicsville, Va.; one nephew, Robert Walpole and his wife, Joyce, of Albuqerque, N.M.; 10 great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and one brother.
