Lawrence A. Den Hartog, 83, of Sheldon died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Sheldon with the Dr. Bruce Ursin officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Mr. Den Hartog was born Sept. 30, 1914, in Boyden, Iowa, the son of Jake and Merle (Horn) Den Hartog. He married Johanna Langstraat on Nov. 28, 1935, in Newkirk, Iowa. He enjoyed flying and received his private pilots license in 1936. In the beginning of World War II he received his flight instructors rating at Iowa City, Iowa, and was sent to Waterloo, Iowa to teach students under the C.P.T. Program. The couple farmed and managed airports in Clarion, Eagle Grove and Webster City, Iowa. He also was an ambulance pilot and a licensed examiner for pilots for 17 years. They moved to Sheldon in 1972. He was member of Sheldon United Methodist Church and had served as a trustee and on the Building Committee.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Elmer and Donald, both of Sheldon; two sisters, Ethel Kuyper of Sheldon and Lois Van Meeteren of Boyden, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Howard.
