Donald T. Nelson was born June 9, 1920, the son of Roy and Lillian Nelson Nelson. He died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at his home in Charter Oak, at the age of seventy-nine, from Guillian Barri (French Polio). Donald was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he was baptized in Christ. At an early age he moved with his family to Omaha, Nebraska, where he was later confirmed. Donald received his education in the Omaha Elementary Schools and the North High School. He entered the United States Army, where he worked as a cook and baker. On June 4, 1942, Donald was united in marriage to Ardis Baumgartner in Henning, Minnesota. Donald was self-employed doing construction jobs and because he enjoyed traveling the couple moved from various areas. Donald retired at the age of fifty-nine, due to health problems and in 1987, they moved to Charter Oak, Iowa. Donald was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa. He enjoyed working on repairing boats and fishing. Donald and Ardis loved traveling in earlier years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Ardis of Charter Oak; four brothers, Roy Nelson and his wife, Betty of Manilla, Vernon Nelson and his wife, Joyce of Omaha, Wallace Nelson and his wife, Mary Margaret of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Darwin Nelson of Omaha; one sister, Delores Johnson of Omaha; brothers and sisters-in-law, Velma and Depold Herman of Kulm, North Dakota, Merton and Melva Baumgartner of Amour, Minnesota, Donna and Alvin Ziegler of Frazee, Minnesota and Elaine and Norman Haedtke of Minnetonka, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2000 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Paul Fohs officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St.John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen, singing 'Abide With Me' and 'The Old Rugged Cross' and congregational singing 'Amazing Grace' and 'How Great Thou Art'. Those serving as pallbearers were Kenneth Martin, Henry Oltmanns, Alan Oltmanns, Larry Kastner, Randy Martin and Jeff McGee. Military honors were American Legion Homer Hall Post Number 66, Charter Oak, Iowa. The family invited everyone to return to the Senior Center and join them in fellowship and lunch. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak handled arrangements.
