LeRoy W. Umstead, of Eagle Grove, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at Hospice Cottages of Fort Dodge at the age of 87. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Lisa Hadler officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.

LeRoy William Umstead was born on Sept. 27, 1913, at Goldfield, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Nellie (McCutcheon) Umstead. He grew up and lived out his life in the Eagle Grove-Goldfield area. LeRoy completed country school in Goldfield and began to work at an early age as a farm hand. He then worked at the area sale barns and as a livestock dealer, before purchasing the Eagle Grove Sale Barn. The horse and cattle auctions were widely known throughout the Midwest. LeRoy was in business for 55 years, retiring at the age of 85. He volunteered at the Wright County 4-H Calf Sale for 62 years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove and was a trustee for many years. In 1936, LeRoy married Myrtle Paulson Hetland, who died in 1938. In 1940 he married Kathryn Helbach, who died in 1989.

LeRoy is survived by his sons, William, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Monte, of Eagle Grove; daughters, Jo Elberg, of Eagle Grove and Jeanne Spangler, of Rock Mount, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Ziegler, of Corwith; brothers, Paul and Dick Umstead, of Eagle Grove and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Myrtle and Kathryn; and two brothers, Lynden and Robert Umstead. Willim Funeral Home
