Fern Ceclia Bennett was born September 3, 1908, in Charles City, the daughter of Edward R.W. and Nettie (Fitkin) Bennett. She graduated from Charles City High School. Fern was united in marriage to Louis George Matson on August 7, 1929, at Mason City. Following their marriage the couple moved to Long Beach, California. After a few years the couple moved back to Iowa and settled in Charles City. Fern and Louis had two children, Sharon and Ron. The couple had enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with their family. Fern was very active in Rainbow and Sunshine Girls. She also enjoyed making afghans for family and friends. Following her husband's death, Fern moved to Mason City, Iowa where she resided for for many years. There she worked for Dr. Johnson's Orthodontics. She very much enjoyed activities that included others. She was a long time volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and a member of the YWCA, and the United Methodist Church. A favorite past time of Fern's was playing cards with her friends. She was an avid bridge player. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and enjoyed having them stay with her from time to time. In 1992, Fern moved to the Belmond Retirement Center where she made her home for seven years before becoming a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center at age 90. She loved being out and about with all the other residents. In her own little way she was funny and always had people laughing.
