Rev. Dick L. Watkins, 71, of Iowa City, formerly Belmond, died January 29 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following lengthy illnesses. Funeral services February 2 at 11 a.m at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with Paul Akin and Bob Dean officiating. Visitation February 1 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home in Iowa City.

Dick Lee Watkins was born September 4, 1930 in Cherokee, the son of Lew S. and Edith Marple Lee Watkins. He graduated from Storm Lake High School and attended Buena Vista College. He graduated from Cornell College. Dick served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He attended the Univerisity of Dubuque Theological Seminary and graduated in 1961. He married Marilyn Joy Wells on March 9, 1952. They served Methodist Churches in Hopkinton, Ft. Dodge, Belmond, West Liberty, Marion, and Iowa City. Marilyn died June 27, 1994. Dick married former Belmond resident, Linda Peters on May 27, 1995 in Iowa City. Over the years he served with the United Methodist Men, Belmond Fire Department, West Liberty Ambulance Service, and was a hospital volunteer in Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents. Survivors include his wife, Linda, of Iowa City; daughters, Susan Dirks (Tim) of Marion and Katherine Anderson (Roger) of Fairfield; son, Lewis of Iowa City; step-sons, Terry Peters (Judy) of Tampa, Florida, Tim Peters (Julie) of Seattle, and Troy Peters of Tipton; step-daughter, Tammy Negrete (Robert) of Washington, Iowa; four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; brothers, John (Fern) of Minot, North Dakota and James (Betty) of Sioux City.
