Frederick W. Markham. 77, of Belmond. passed away Sunday, February 8. 2004 at the Belmond Medical Center.Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 11 at Calvary Baptist Church, Belmond. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Frederick W. Markham was born February 4, 1927, in Franklin County southeast of Meservey, the son of Ellis and Lizzie Markhan. Fred started country school near Meservey. The family moved to a farm northeast of Rowan and he attended grade school and high schoo there where he played basketball and baseball. Fred graduated in 1945 and continued to play basketball and baseball for the town team. Fred started raising Holstein dairy cattle as a boy and had many livestock projects on his father's farm. After graduation Fred bought a truck and did general trucking of livestock and grain along with helping his father on the farm.

On February 14. 1948 Fred married Jean Rae Wharton at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved a little house onto his parents' farm and they lived there until 1949. The couple then started farming southeast of Thornton. In 1962, Fred and Jean had a dairy sale and moved to a bigger farm northeast of Clarion. He was a grain farmer and sold feeder pigs for 25 years. Rheumatoid arthritis forced Fred to give up farming. In 1987, Fred and Jean moved to Belmond where they had bought a home in 1979.

Fred is survived by his wife, Jean; three daughters, Peggy Wolters and husband Gary; Diane Kallal and husband, Ronald; Suzanne Kocurek; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor Larrick of Osage and Gladys Leist of Rochester, Minnesota; one brother, Donald and wife, Joyce of Belmond; many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and one younger sister, Maurine Peters.
