Alberta Jean Middleton, 79, of Belmond, passed away Friday, January 23, 2004 at the Belmond Medical Center. Alberta Jean Thayer was born August 2, 1924, in Belmond, the daughter of Claude Harold and Clara Belle (Spurlin) Thayer. She was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Belmond. She attended school in Belmond. During high school she was a cheerleader for four years. Alberta graduated from Belmond High School in 1942. On March 2, 1942 she was united in marriage to Richard Guy Middleton in Bethany, Missouri. The couple lived in Waco, Texas and Clarion before settling in Belmond. Alberta worked part time for Drs. Bob Misner and Les Classic at the veterinary clinic and for Ris Van. She then worked for Dr. A.M. Larson from 1961 to 1987. She loved to golf and was a member of the Belmond Country Club. She also bowled for over 25 years on the Belmond Women's Bowling League. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.
Alberta is survived by three sons, Thomas and wife, Vicky of Belmond; Ronald and wife, Cheryl of Omaha, Nebraska; Marc and wife, Nancy of Belmond; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Stoffer and husband, Ed of Belmond and Genevieve Smith of Belmond; special brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jane Middleton of Clarion; extended family, Rosemary Middleton of Belmond and extended grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; sister, Dorothy and brother-in-law, George (Coonie) Smith.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 26, at the United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Dona Cleveland, organist and Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Sandy Anderson, Betty Barkema, Marcie Halverson, Cleona Tegland, Marcey Foss, Carmel Hammond, Renee McLaughlin, Lynna Smith. Casket bearers were Rick Middleton, Merlin Halverson, Lee Wilkerson, Doug Stoffer, Chris McMurray and Bob Mourlam.

Alberta is survived by sons, Thomas (Vicky) Middleton of Belmond, Ronald (Cheryl) Middleton of Omaha and Marc (Nancy) Middleton of Belmond; grandchildren, Vicki (Lee) Wilkerson and Richard (Susan) Middleton of Denver, Colorado, Nicole (Chris) McMurray of Meservey and Andrea (Rick) Lee of Summerville, South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Christian, Addison, Daniel, Ricki, and Kaytlynn; sisters, Irene (Ed) Stoffer and Genevieve Smith both of Belmond; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Jane Middleton of Clarion; extended family, Rosemary Middleton of Belmond, Matt Owens and his son, Seth of Cameron, Missouri; and Jackie (Mike) Stephenson and their children, Alan, Michelle and Mickey of Port St. Luce, Florida.
