Mary E. “Betty” Bates, 79, of Rochester, Minnesota, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Samaritan Bethany on 8th Nursing Home, Rochester, Minnesota. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 8th at 10 a.m. at the Samaritan Bethany on 8th Nursing Home. Rev. David Rinden officiated at the 10 a.m. service. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion, at 2:30 p.m. Mary E. Austin was born in Clarion on May 24, 1921. She was raised in the Clarion area and attended Clarion schools, graduating from Clarion High School in 1939. She also attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. In 1944 she enlisted in the Waves where she was a Technician in various hospitals. She lived in Los Angeles and Roland Heights, California, and moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1989 and worked as a Medical Transcriber. She and Loren Bates were married in 1947 and they made their home in Whittier, California. They were later divorced. Betty moved to Rochester in 1989 and was employed at the Mayo Clinic as a Medical Transcription Secretary. She enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling. She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church. She is survived by three nieces and two nephews, one grandniece. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Amy Hill; two brothers, Ralph and Charles Austin, and one nephew, Chuck A. Hill.
